The Foundations of Islaamic Studies Part 1 (IIS 011)

Instructor: Dr. Bilal Philips

No. of modules: 9

This foundational course in Islaamic Studies (FOIS) was developed in the 90s from lecture notes of various Islaamic Studies courses and seminars which I have conducted in various parts of the world, like Dublin, Ireland, and Montreal, Canada. The source of these notes is extractions from some published works of mine namely: Islamic Studies Series, Books 1-4, The Fundamentals of Tawheed, The Purpose of Creation, Usool at-Tafseer, and The Evolution of Fiqh. The course was also presented on Sharjah Television and became, the prescribed text Islamic Studies II course offered in the BAIS program at Preston University, Ajman, UAE.

The main goal of this course is to give students a reliable introduction to the fundamental concepts which form the foundations of the main fields of Islamic knowledge. It should be noted that the essential areas of Seerah, History and Arabic are missing from the course. Furthermore, the student should be aware that this concise presentation can in no way be compared to what is taught in four-year university courses or the Usool ad Deen Degree program available on the IOU.
